Principal's Message
Friday 20 October 2023 - Term 4 Week 2
Dear Parents and Carers,
On the Feast Day of St Anne and St Joachim (observed on July 26 but celebrated at school last Friday), we commemorate the lives of Mary's parents, who were the earthly grandparents of Jesus. While our knowledge of Saints Anne and Joachim is quite limited, one can acknowledge that to be the parents of Jesus's earthly mother, Saint Anne and Saint Joachim must have been exceptionally faithful and dedicated parents.
During Grandparents’ Day we consider the significant role grandparents play in guiding and loving their grandchildren. Pope Francis once shared his thoughts on Saints Anne and Joachim, stating:
Mary grew up in the home of Joachim and Anne; she was surrounded by their love and faith: in their home, she learned to listen to the Lord and to follow his will. Saints Joachim and Anne were part of a long chain of people who had transmitted their faith and love for God, expressed in the warmth and love of family life, down to Mary, who received the Son of God in her womb and who gave him to the world, to us.
Our celebration last Friday was one of love and faith. It highlighted the extraordinary relationship between our students and their grandparents. Each year we are blessed to celebrate Grandparents’ Day with those we love, and as a school community, we acknowledge the tremendous presence grandparents have in our lives. It is also warming to see so many St Augustine’s alumni present as parents or grandparents on such days.
The Catholic School’s Parent Assembly are hosting a webinar on October 30 presented by Clinical Psychologist Mariane Power. Mariane's lived experience of parenting two twice-exceptional children (both gifted and neurodivergent) and her own late diagnosis of ADHD, combined with her professional expertise in supporting neurodivergent people, should make for a fascinating presentation. More information can be found on the flyer in this newsletter.
Next week, we will host our family members for Learning Journeys. Our students look forward to sharing their learning with you. We will also welcome many new families to the school with the Kindergarten 2024 Wine and Cheese Night.
The Fete preparation is in full swing. Donations and helpers are most welcome and appreciated.
Kind Regards,
Naomi Loader

SHHH!! It’s a surprise!!
It’s Fr Joy’s birthday on Friday 27 October, so come along to the 9am Mass on Sunday 29 October to celebrate the Eucharist. After the Mass we will sing Happy Birthday to Fr Joy and share some cake and a cuppa. The children will be invited to make a card for him or sign a large card during a lunchtime next week and these will be handed to him after the Mass. If your family would like to bring a plate to share, it would be greatly appreciated as it is St Augustine’s Primary School’s responsibility to supply the morning tea. Plates to share can be left on the tables outside the church as you arrive.
Parish Luncheon
On the 3rd Wednesday of each month, a social parish luncheon is held in the Curran Centre at 12 noon. Everyone is welcome to come along and meet some other parishioners and have a chat. A plate to share is welcome, but not essential. Pop in for a quick cuppa if you don’t have time to stay for lunch.

Rugby Friendly v Mary Help of Christians
Today St Augustine’s hosted a Rugby Union Friendly match against Mary Help of Christians, Sawtell. It was a brilliant showcase of not only the exceptional skill level of both of these teams, but also their wonderful sportsmanship and friendship. Players from both sides also sported their crazy socks in support of SOCKTOBER. At half time St Augustine’s had a narrow lead of 7-0 but Mary Help came back strong in the second half, scoring some impressive tries and converting from the sideline. In the end Mary Help came away with the win with a final score of 26 to 17.
We would like to sincerely thank coaches Chris Webb and Matt Rowbotham for their final duties as St Augustine’s Rugby coaches after many years of service. A big thank you also to our wonderful groundsman for preparing the fields, and to Paul Butcher and the Aherne family who worked hard to get the goal posts erected at our school so that we could host our own matches back on home turf.
And finally, we would like to thank our opponents, Mary Help of Christians, for coming and giving us a wonderful game to exhibit to our school community
Summer Sports Trials
We would like to congratulate the many St Augustine’s Year 4 and 5 boys and girls who have been successful in gaining a place to trial for cricket, basketball, tennis and touch football at our Clarence Zone Summer Sports Trials.
A Compass invitation and paper permission form have been sent home to families. Please complete and return the forms as soon as possible so we can pass information on to those coordinating the trials.
